“What
is it that’s made the 3 Series the object of envy and imitation
among its contemporaries, as well as a perennial 10Best car? Torquey,
straight-six engines smoother than satin? Snick-snick manual transmissions?
Prizefighter reflexes? Indeed – with proportions so pure even
BMW is afraid to tamper with them. But with its 12th consecutive
award here we’ve long since isolated BMW’s critical ingredient:
ride quality.” –
Car and Driver, January 2003 upon awarding the 3 Series 10Best recognition.

The 3 Series can be easily customized to suit
your particular lifestyle and driving attitude. Several stand-alone
options such as bi-xenon headlights and an on-board navigation system
are available. The 3 Series is also available with three options packages
that combine related features – Sport, Premium and Cold Weather.
For example, the Sport Package on the 330i Sedan includes:
The
3 Series Sedan’s famously smooth inline six-cylinder
engine is available in two different engine displacements
(3.0-liter and 2.5-liter) and three transmission choices: 5-speed
manual standard, or optional automatic or STEPTRONIC
automatic. As a result of BMW’s engineering expertise, these
engines outperform many other manufacturers’ larger engines
– while still achieving Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle1
(ULEV)status.

The
2.5-liter engine produces 184 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque
at 3500 rpm.

The
3.0-liter engine produces 225 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque
at 3500 rpm.

BMW’s
inline six-cylinder engines have received consistent praise from reviewers,
such as Road & Track’s conclusion that the 3.0-liter is,
“…a sweetheart of an engine. Its best attribute is that
its power delivery is felt instantaneously almost anywhere in the
rpm spectrum.” 2 And Car and Driver’s comment,
“[BMW’s] ultra-smooth 2.5 liter in-line six engine belts
out 184 horsepower and a baritone-sax engine note that's worthy of
a Ken Burns PBS documentary.” 3 The
3 Series is also available with BMW’s all-wheel drive
system for surefooted wet-weather handling. The AWD system
works with the vehicle’s traction control systems – All
Season Traction and Dynamic Stability Control
– to help maintain road-holding stability. All-wheel drive 3
Series models also include Hill Descent Control, which helps you maintain
control of the vehicle when going down steep or slippery hills.
